OK, creating a demonstration of using map layers for lighting was a long
distraction... during which I discovered a significant blending bug,
whoops. Luckily there is a simple workaround for it.

I'm going to post an announcement shortly.

I can't post in the Announcements forum of SS, so you'll have to move the
