The --runfast option (e.g. scons autotest_rpg) or trying to increase the frame rate by holding shift+tab doesn't work to increase the framerate above 60 fps on OSX. IIRC SDL 1.2 doesn't have options to enable/disable vsync. Regardless, frame skipping would be a solution, on all platforms, without requiring backend changes.
