Hugely speed up draw_background and support Surfaces; add 'zoom' arg to fuzzyrect

draw_background now just calls fuzzyrect to draw a chequer pattern instead of
scaling up the results, which is so slow that when drawing it over a large
window, it could cause the framerate to drop, as noticed by some people.
