Go into the sprite, maptile or map editors and hold down two keys to move diagonal. I find that, except for the first few steps, in all four diagonal directions you move twice as fast vertically as horizontally! 

Also, if you go to a long help page and hold down up/down, I swear that the repeat rate slows down a bit after the first half second! This has been annoying me for years, though I've never made a proper attempt to check if I'm even imagining it.
