[Ohrrpgce] scrambled preview of map layers

I was going to complain "How can it be broken already? I haven't even
committed my rewrite yet!" But it turns out I did make pretty significant
changes already back in June, which would surely be the cause. Maybe I'll
have time to look at this tomorrow.
