unix: Expose list_files_or_subdirs and make it possible to get files AND subdirs

Also:
- Fix crash if "" is passed as the directory
- Don't log anything if a broken symlink is encountered

Although in hindsight, it would have been simpler to just call it twice and
concat the results.
