I've no experience with Ubuntu 8.10, but I have used the 64-bit version of
8.04. From my experience, the driver support is buggier in the 64-bit version
of the Operating System.

Let me know if the you have trouble tracking down the problem; I have a spare
partition I can install 64-bit 8.10 onto if the need arises.
