You installed using the deb files from
http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/archive/debian/ right?

Can you post the output of:

  ldd `which ohrrpgce-game`

Have you tested any other games that use libsdl-mixer1.2 for sound output?

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my Ubuntu box to 8.10, but it is a 32
bit machine, not a 64 bit machine, so I don't know yet whether or not I will be
able to reproduce the problem.
