scons: fix builds when linker doesn't respect -( and -); don't use these at all

I know they don't work, and cause an error, in (at least previous versions of)
macOS, but apparently they don't work, without error, on NixOS. I decided to just
remove them completely so that we don't rely on an unportable feature.
