Yes, we have to replace STT anyway to get rid of the current length limits, because of variable-width fonts, customisable menu slices, and >256 character (UTF8 encoded) fonts.
While we're at it we should probably change how the default values are stored: in a table somewhere instead of in every call to readglobalstring. However, passing the default value is great for self-documenting code, so I'm torn.
