I'm going to separate the editor and game fonts (in fact that's the next
thing I'm working on, maybe even before markup), so people editing their
font won't be a problem.

I tried it out now and found that I had to update the build system, and
also the --version printing so itthe OS encoding instead of Latin-1. Tested
it on Linux with utf8, latin1 and gb18030. Still figuring out how to encode
correctly on Windows.
Printing the version in g/c_debug,txt works too: everything in that file is
Latin-1 encoded. Storing the version in general.reld isn't a problem either.

So many old users are constantly revisiting the engine, it figures that at
some point devs would visit too :)
You'd find things haven't changed that much, except the code quality has
improved a lot over the years.

Input on discussions is also welcome. I've been meaning to send an email to
the list discussing embedding a new script intepreter (I'm evaluating
squirrel, micropython and lua) and using that instead of FB for a lot of
things, especially editors. I constantly hear people say they want to
contribute but don't want to learn/install FB.
