What I don't understand is why music_audiere (the audiere portion of
music_native/native2 I factored out) stopped working on Windows, and when.
It was the default music backend originally (though not in any release)
and must have worked, but I couldn't get any builds of old versions of it
to work on win XP, as far back as I could compile at all without installing
an ancient version of FB.

Audiere does still work on linux, but only by emulating/enabling legacy
/dev/dsp somehow (eg the PulseAudio padsp utility)

Audiere was created by the authors of some other game engine, and I
remember finding a comment from one of them expressing surprise that anyone
still used it and saying there were better options (but I don't know what
those are).
I don't understand why, Audiere has clearly had lots of work put into it,
and seems well written, well documented and featureful, it just hasn't been
maintained.

I agree that there's not much point building music_native/native2 nightly
when they're so broken. I'll probably try to get music_audiere working
again in future.

Oh that reminds me, recently I tried to reproduce that MIDI crash bug in
SDL_mixer but unfortunately couldn't.
