The wrong global text string was used for the Purchases default caption.

The editor used slot 313; get_special_menu_caption used slot 312 (which was unused)

So if you didn't set a custom caption, then you would get a blank caption!
Unless you hadn't entered the Global Text Strings editor since Purchases was
added, in which case the default "Purchases" would get used.
