New information! I was googling around for similar bugs affecting other SDL 1.2 based games on Ubuntu Linux, and I ran across this Dwarf Fortress bug: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=7778

They describe a similar keyboard input freeze, and bhj21 reports a workaround using the xdotool to send keyboard events to the program's X Window ID

I got the bug to happen in the ohrrpgce, and then I tried the xdotool workaround, and it was successful.

(In this case successful means not that the problem was fixed, but that I was able to send keys one-by-one from the command line until I was able to save and exit without losing anything.)

bhj21 apparently tracked the bug down to SDL's interactions with the X Input Method server (IMS)

The df bug remains unsolved.

(opening a dup bug for this. If/when we recover our old bugzilla bugs, this can be merged with that bug)

Today I had this bug happen to me 3 times on Linux. Once when spawning ohrrpgce-game for "Test Game" and twice more when compiling scripts by pressing F5

The third time, I was running strace. Here is the end of the strace output. I don't know if it is useful information or not
