Right, I certainly wouldn't want to prevent people who have already re-purposed
counter from using new counter features, but there is no need to add a new stat
by default to accomplish that.

The default value for default counter stat will be the existing "counter". If A
person who is already using counter for something wants to add counter-attacks
to their game they can just add another stat and change the default default
stat.
