I think Adam was asking about giving the game player a way to enter 
strings. We now have a way for the script author to do it, but not yet 
any way for the game player....

Hmm, wait. I see you *did* write that feature in 
http://listserver.dreamhost.com/pipermail/ohrrpgce-motherhamster.org/2005-June/000445.html 
but it does not appear to be checked into plotscr.hsd

I think it was pending joystick disabling (or at least changing the 
joystick button from J to CTRL+J) ... and I have just done that. CTRL+J 
is now the joystick calibration button, freeing ordinary J for 
typing-related purposes.
